Hello! Or shall I say, “Bonjour.” That’s French, and I am the editor of The New York Times’ Fashion & Style section. I’m sure you’re familiar with all three of my names—or four, if you count the hyphenated part as two separate names, which they do in Cannes, but only when you’re wearing loafers in an inflatable runabout and only, and this is an absolute must, if that inflatable runabout is captained by a moneyed skipper.
I am acquainted with a lot of moneyed skippers. It is why I am the editor of the Fashion & Style section, and, at least from what I know—I’m trying not to make too many assumptions, because, you know, journalism—you are not.
Speaking of journalism, our little paper has one of its big days today. It’s Thursday! Which means it’s time to head over to our section and see what’s hip. So what’s hip, trending, down, etc.? First of all, moms are really into wearing their kids’ clothes. They’re going batty for it! Some moms are even inspiring childrens’ clothing designers to make bigger clothes for them. It’s sweet. You’ll love it, especially if you have a Gender Reveal Party coming up, which I’m sure you do.
In other news, old celebrities! I get that they’re old, which means, I suppose, that they’re not young, but I guess it didn’t really hit me until just now that they are, indeed, old and showing the physical changes frequently associated with being old. So yes, in short: old celebrities are looking old. That’s really big right now.
The last huge thing that is sweeping the nation right now is snow globes. Snow globes are terribly, painfully in. Recently, when I was writing in a big leather book which I had inscribed with “Stream of Consciousness Luxury Thoughts” in gold leaf, I wrote down, “Take socialite on teddy bear picnic reliving nostalgia the days of old snow globe snow globe snow globe snow globe.” And I just couldn’t stop writing “snow globe.” This was before the whole snow globe craze even started. A lot of people ask how we come up with these topics and trends, and the answer is usually found in my Stream of Consciousness Luxury Thoughts book. It’s all very James Joycean over here at the Fashion & Style section. But, well, I don’t have to tell you that.
Of course, there’s also a nifty piece on Betsey Johnson’s comeback. We also find the incomparable Cathy Horyn on pre-fall (“There’s a continuing pajama game,” she writes), and Prince Caramanica joyous in bending our eye on a swish menswear shop.
But you don’t think of that sort of thing when you think of the Fashion & Style section, do you? God, I hope not. Now let’s head up to the neat slideshow and take a journey through a few more trendy items, shall we?
